5/28/13: Essay in Psychology Today


I was thrilled to contribute an essay to Psychology Today in commemoration of Memorial Day about my grandfathers, who served in World War II. I wrote about their service and how they were the inspiration for my forthcoming novel, The Tide King, out this month:

As Mitch Albom so aptly wrote, “It is not until much later, as the skin sags and the heart weakens, that children understand; their stories, and all their accomplishments, sit atop the stories of their mothers and fathers, stones upon stones, beneath the waters of their lives.” Likewise, it took some time before I began to consider the sum of my grandfather’s life outside of his narrow role in mine.
