It seems like every story published these days is magical realism or surreal, but where Michalski truly shines is that she focuses on strict realism while also writing about often overlooked populations. Her stories are honest and real but also surprising and fresh. She doesn’t sentimentalize or cut corners. As with her other books, From Here is just a strong collection of writing. That, in itself, seems more anarchic than just about anything I’ve read in a while.
